The key to dieting is always finding tricks and smart ideas to help us get through those difficult times. Sometimes we don't always struggle with eating a clean breakfast and lunch, but we struggle with hunger at odd times of the day. Some of us wake up in the middle of the night looking to eat anything and everything in the fridge, including the fridge itself. The key here is not to starve yourself and refuse to eat when you are hungry, but instead to find the right things that are acceptable to eat at these times. 
There is a basic rule in the midnight snack category. No simple sugars, stimulants, nothing spicy and nothing fatty. We need a basic snack of some good quality complex carbohydrates which release serotonin and help you relax. Fiber also helps fill you. And protein due o the fact that it takes longer to digest therefore it fills you for longer. 
Here are some healthy ideas for snacks when you wake up in the middle of the night. 
  1. A high fiber cereal with skim milk. Quick and easy to put together and a good balance of high quality macro nutrients.
  2. Avocado  or cheese on pro-vita or crispbread. The good quality fats assist with satiety and the fiber keeps you filling full.
  3. Greek yoghurt with granola or oats. Once again a balance of good quality fats and carbohydrates.
  4. Wholewheat bread with sugar free peanut butter. You can also use other nut butters such as macadamia or almond nut butter.
  5. My personal favourite is cottage cheese. It tastes so good and fills you perfectly.
The goal is not to starve ourselves. When we are hungry we eat. But it is to teach ourselves that we always have an option when we eat and there is always a healthier choice. No more 1am chocolates. Good luck ladies!
