The busy women and the lack of a sleep

Juggling a career, children’s extra-mural activities, finding the time for gym and trying to get some hours of sleep can become extremely draining.

It is incredibly important that we switch our minds off, stop worrying about tomorrow’s troubles and get a decent night’s sleep.

Studies at Harvard Medical School, show that on average a person needs at least five hours of sleep per night.

We often hear of the benefits of a goodnights rest but how exactly does a lack of sleep affect us?

The body is made up of several different systems that work together as a unit enabling us to function correctly. The Central Nervous System, which comprises the brain and the spinal cord has the responsibility of controlling the activities of the body.  When an individual does not receive the adequate amount of sleep, the Central Nervous System is compromised. The brain experiences exhaustion, therefore inhibiting the neurons, in the brain, to find new pathways to send and receive signals from the different parts of the body.

Our Immune system is also at risk. During sleep the immune system produces cells that enable the body to fight infections, it also produces protective cytokines. These protective cytokines help the body fight viral and bacterial infections; therefore a lack of sleep will weaken your immune system causing you to become more ill more often, and your recovery rate will decrease.

A lack of sleep effects the digestive system, less sleep often leads to weight gain, which brings forth the problem of obesity. Studies show that a lack of sleep can lead to increased cravings for sugar, this really does not help our dilemma of finding the time for exercise in our busy days. Leptin is a hormone that tells the brain that you have had enough to eat; with a lack of sleep the Leptin hormone decreases, causing you to eat more.

The Cardiovascular system is also greatly affected. Lack of sleep tends to elevate blood pressure, which can lead to heart disease and often heart attacks or strokes.

The cognitive side effects of sleep deprivation are decreased levels of concentration, which in turn decreases your body’s ability to perform tasks at maximum capacity. In the long run a lack of sleep can even cause you to have hallucinations.

A lack of sleep also has an ageing effect. The skin is particularly affected by sleep deprivation. Our bodies release Cortisol, which is a stress hormone, excessive amounts of cortisol breakdown our skin’s collagen, which is a protein that maintains the elasticity and keeps our skin smooth.

As a busy women in this busy world, we often put everyone else’s needs before our own; but we need to ensure that we take care of ourselves, we need to make sleep a priority in order to give our bodies the best chance of rest and regeneration.
