A well balanced diet

A well balanced, low GI diet consisting of healthy carbohydrates, lean protein, plants based fats and of course fruit and vegetables is necessary for all, man or woman, young or old. Whilst being the fairer sex, there are still a few things which are especially nutritionally important for women.

Many women cut dairy out of their diets when trying to shed a few Kilos. Dairy is the best source of Calcium which is important for bone health. Insufficient calcium in the body can lead to osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is the thinning of bone tissue and a loss of bone density over time.

It is important to remember that insufficient Vitamin D levels in the body prevents the absorption of calcium. The best source of vitamin D is sunlight. Many of us refrain from sitting in the sun and if we do, we slap on a wod of SPF, which prevents absorption of vitamin D. Aim to get thirty minutes of sunlight per day. If you are worried about your vitamin D levels you can have them checked and a healthcare provider can recommend a supplement if your levels are low.

Women are more at risk for osteoporosis than men, especially Caucasian and Asian women. Bone mass begins to deplete after the age of thirty and speeds up after a woman reaches menopause. To obtain sufficient calcium for prevention of osteoporosis, aim to eat 2-3 servings of dairy products per day with a generous serving of green vegetables, and regular use of calcium-fortified foods like orange juice and breakfast cereals.
